Cardiff is not only the capital city of Wales; it’s also its largest and the commercial centre of the country. Cardiff has a rich heritage with a thriving cultural and sporting scene attracting tourists from around the world and has been voted one of the top 13 destinations worldwide.

Situated on the River Taff on the edge of the Bristol Channel, Cardiff started life as a Roman fort. The grand medieval castle that stands today is a reminder of Cardiff’s strategic importance throughout history. However, from the 14th century Cardiff became increasingly important as a trading port, reaching prominence during the Industrial Revolution when it was the largest coal exporting port in the world. The port was also where Captain Scott set sail in 1910 on his ill-fated adventure to the South Pole.

Today the coal has been replaced by commerce, finance, sports, media and tourism. Listed as one of the UK’s top 10 attractions on Britain’s official tourism website, Cardiff has plenty to offer the 12 million plus holidaymakers that pass through the city each year. Popular attractions include Cardiff Castle, St. David’s Hall, Llandaff Cathedral as well museums, major sporting venues like the imposing Millennium Stadium and the shopping districts of Queen Street and St. Mary’s. Then there’s Cardiff Bay, the redeveloped docklands, where visitors can enjoy water sports and sailing or simply relax at one of the numerous bars or restaurants and absorb Cardiff’s wonderfully cosmopolitan atmosphere.
