Description:

Óbidos is a delightful little medieval walled town with quaint cobble streets situated in the southern region of the Silver Coast not far from Peniche. The entrance to the town is through an impressive portcullis to the south, which leads into the rambling streets lined with charming traditional blue and white painted residential townhouses interspersed with crafts shops, tea houses and restaurants. The main street leads north to the castle, which has been painstakingly restored and is now a government run hotel or Pousada.

The town has a peaceful, slightly bohemian atmosphere and has been popular with artists for many years. Their work can be admired and purchased from the various art galleries in the town. Another attraction for those with a sweet tooth is the annual Chocolate Fair in November. Artist create awe-inspiring sculptures from chocolate and visitors are invited to taste samples and drink the famous local cherry brandy liquor called Ginginha from cups made from chocolate!
