Description:

Once an island, Peniche is now a major fishing port on a peninsular jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean on the Southern Silver Cost or Costa de Prata, as the region is know locally. Surrounded by excellent beaches with rocky outcrops, Peniche is famous for its exceptional and consistent surfing conditions. The peninsular offers both north and south-facing beaches and the strong winds and powerful Atlantic swell combine to make outstanding tubular waves, called “supertubos”, which are considered amongst the best in Europe. The region is also popular with other water sports enthusiasts like windsurfers and kite surfers.

Besides Watersports, Peniche is also well known for its excellent fish restaurants serving fresh seafood and shell fish dishes. You can watch the daily catch being landed at the fishing port and enjoy it served up at a local restaurant within hours!

The 16th century fortress of Fortaleza in the southern end of the peninsular was once a notorious jail holding political prisoners of the Salazar regime. This unpopular dictatorship was finally overthrown during the bloodless revolution of the 25th of April 1974, a date on the Portuguese calendar now celebrated with a public holiday.

The Berlengas Islands, an archipelago 10 kilometres (6 miles) off the coast, are a protected marine reserve and a popular diving spot, attracting divers from around the world. In the summer there’s a ferry taking day trippers to the islands from Peniche to see the wonderful variety of seabirds, such as puffins, guillemots, gulls, and cormorants that colonise the islands.
