Description:

Santarém is situated on hills just north of the river Tagus with commanding views cross the river plain. It was an important strategic town for the Romans and Moors and its position at the heart of the Ribatejo lends itself to its current status as the regions capital. From the 13th to 15th centuries the palace (now the site of the 17th-century baroque church, Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Conceição) was a popular royal residence during the hunting season. A climb to the top of the 15th-century clock tower proffers excellent views over the Tagus. The Ribatejo is important for agriculture and the Santarém agricultural fair in June is popular locally. Bullfighting is also a popular attraction, many of the bulls having been bred and reared in the Ribatejo.
