Description:

Tomar is a charming town, typically Portuguese with its whitewashed houses, cobbled streets and tree lined plazas. Situated on the banks of the river Nabão in the Northern Ribatejo, Tomar’s main claim to fame is its UNESCO World Heritage site of the Convent of Christ (Convento de Cristo). The Convent of Christ was the Portuguese headquarters of the Knights Templar (or Knights of Christ as they were latterly known), one of several military orders founded around Europe in the days of the Crusades. Situated in wooded hills overlooking Tomar, the magnificent castle and monastery are reminders of the mysterious and secretive military orders that existed in the Middle Ages.

Tomar is also famous for its Festa dos Tabuleiros (Festival of the Trays), supposedly an old pagan fertility festival but today an excellent excuse for a week-long party with music, drinking and dancing. The Festival of the Trays is held every four years during the first week in July.
